A Celebration of Life: Steve Hutzler

It is with heavy hearts we convey the news of the passing of our beloved Steve Hutzler.  A husband, father, and former motorcycle cop, Steve became a Yoga instructor after he retired.   Who’d a thunk it?  But it suited him.  Steve shared his story in small parts, as he taught, and in doing so balanced the tenderness and rough edges of the masculine in a graceful and humorous manner for us to witness and draw strength from.

The memorials are over, but we can continue to celebrate his life. Steve told Elizabeth: “If people want to honor me, tell them to come into the room and stand on the line.”  There might have been a explicative within the statement.

Come, stand on the line with us.

Yesterday is History,
Tomorrow is a Mystery,
but Today is a Gift.

Submit to a daily practice. Your loyalty to that is a ring on the door. Keep knocking, and the joy inside will eventually open a window and look out to see who’s there. –Rumi

Since it opened in 2002, the Bikram Yoga studio in Corvallis has invited hundreds of people to join together in the daily practice of Hatha Yoga, a method of physical exercise and mental discipline designed to release the joy within all of us. The room is hot, heated to over 100 degrees, but it’s a safe place and a healing place. The 26 poses and two breathing exercises of the sequence are rigorous and aerobic, but people practice at their own level. The perfect pose is the best you can do that day, with the body you have, in that moment. As Bikram himself puts it, “The purpose of yoga is to help us to fully inhabit and to realize the awesome potential of our true selves.” Classes are offered seven days a week, morning and afternoon, taught by Bikram-certified instructors, teachers of both skill and compassion. The many people who now attend one or more of these classes each week form a genuine community. Every class, every pose, every student in the room helps to generate an energy that sustains and supports everyone else. Come and join us, as soon as you are ready to try!
